Gary William Sanford, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, surrounded by love. He was born on October 20, 1939, and lived a life deeply rooted in family, friendship, hard work, and the natural world.
Gary was the proud father of three children: Mark William Sanford and his wife Heather Sanford, Jeffrey John Sanford, and Lisa Ann Sanford-Cirilo and her husband Jaime Cirilo. Above all else, Gary treasured his role as a grandfather. He is survived by his three beloved grandchildren: Jordan Elizabeth Sanford, Evan John Sanford, and Jackson John Sanford. He spoke of them often and with immense pride, following their lives closely and delighting in who they were becoming. Their visits—especially in his final days—meant the world to him and brought him deep comfort, joy, and peace.
Gary served as an Army reservist and was a proud Ferris State football player in his younger years. He dedicated 38.7 years of his professional life to General Motors, working as a machine repairman, where he built lifelong friendships that remained important to him throughout his life. His work ethic, loyalty, and camaraderie defined that chapter of his life and the friendships he cherished.
An avid outdoorsman and environmentalist, Gary found his greatest joy on his farm, where he loved watching wildlife thrive. One of the true highlights of his life—and a beloved family tradition—was making maple syrup. Alongside his dear friend Bob Moss, Gary spent countless hours tapping trees, collecting sap, and boiling it down with care and pride. He was absolutely tickled by the finished product. Though he often talked about selling his syrup, he gave most of it away instead—wanting others to experience something he was so proud of. Passing this tradition on to his children and grandchildren was important to him, and he hoped it would continue for generations.
Gary was, at his core, a friend to everyone. People were naturally drawn to him for his warmth, kindness, positivity, and ever-present sense of humor. He always had a joke ready and a smile to share. His generous spirit showed itself in his love of gift-giving—he always seemed to have something special for everyone. Even in his final days, Gary made sure his neighbors had gifts, a quiet reflection of the thoughtful and giving man he remained until the very end.
Gary lived with humility, integrity, and a deep love for his family, his friends, and the land he cared for. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, laughter, hard work, and love that will be cherished for generations.
The family will receive visitors from 11:30-12 on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Avram Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life at 12 Noon.
